Belt Conveyors

A belt conveyor is a system of pulleys with a long loop of fabric or other material stretched between them. Usually at least one of the pulleys is motorized to pull the belt along with it. They are used to conveniently move heavy objects from one part of a processing facility to another. They can be extremely complex or quite simple. Belt conveyors are the most commonly used powered conveyors because they are the most versatile and the least expensive. Product is conveyed directly on the belt so both regular and irregular shaped objects, large or small, light and heavy, can be transported successfully. Belt conveyors can be used to transport product in a straight line or through changes in elevation or direction. In certain applications they can also be used for static accumulation or cartons. Rubber conveyor belts are commonly used to convey items with irregular bottom surfaces, small items that would fall in between rollers or bags of product that would sag between rollers. Belt conveyors are generally fairly similar in construction consisting of a metal frame with rollers at either end of a flat metal bed. The belt is looped around each of the rollers and when one of the rollers is powered the belting slides across the solid metal frame bed, moving the product. In heavy use applications the beds which the belting is pulled over are replaced with rollers. The rollers allow weight to be conveyed as they reduce the amount of friction generated from the heavier loading on the belting.

The belt provides a continuous surface on which to place boxes or other objects. It is almost always made of two different types of material that have been fixed together. The inside of the belt is rough and strong, so as to stand up to the wear and tear of being pulled along by motorized wheels. The outer layer, which is the layer that workers use to convey materials, is usually softer and more impact resistant. Belt conveyors have traditionally had difficulty navigating corners or tight turns. Most belt and pulley systems need to be in a straight line in order to function properly. However, most warehouses do not offer such clear paths between where the objects are and where they need to be conveyed to. In that situation, most complexes use a series of belt conveyor systems. When there is a corner that must be gone around, they will design a series of small conveyors, each of which is at the appropriate angle to make the turn gently.

Screw Conveyors

They are used in many bulk handling industries. Screw conveyors in modern industry are often used horizontally or at a slight incline as an efficient way to move semi-solid materials, including food waste, wood chips, aggregates, cereal grains, animal feed, boiler ash, meat and bone meal,municipal solid waste , and many others. Screw conveyors can be operated with the flow of material inclined upward. When space allows, this is a very economical method of elevating and conveying. As the angle of inclination increases, the capacity of a given unit rapidly decreases

Chain Conveyors

Chain conveyors are primarily used to transport heavy unit loads, e.g. pallets, grid boxes, and industrial containers. These conveyors can be single or double chain strand in configuration. The load is positioned on the chains, the friction pulls the load forward. Chain conveyors are generally easy to install and have very minimum maintenance for users.

Bucket Elevators

A centrifugal discharge elevator may be vertical or inclined. Vertical elevators depend entirely on the action of centrifugal force to get the material into the discharge chute and must be run at speeds relatively high. Inclined elevators with buckets spaced apart or set close together may have the discharge chute set partly under the head pulley. Since they don't depend entirely on the centrifugal force to put the material into the chute, the speed may be relatively lower.

Nearly all centrifugal discharge elevators have spaced buckets with rounded bottoms. They pick up their load from a boot, a pit, or a pile of material at the foot pulley.

The buckets can be also triangular in cross section and set close to on the belt with little or no clearance between them. This is a continuous bucket elevator. Its main use is to carry difficult materials at slow speed.

Vibrating Screens

Vibrating screens are commonly used in the process industries for size segregation of polydisperse particle mixtures. Multiple deck screens are used for the grading of the primary mixture into different groups according to size.

The primary function of a screen is to pass the fine particles through the screen surface. For any granular material subject to vibration, the fines naturally sink to the bottom while larger particles float to the top.

This phenomenon of stratification results in an efficient exposure of fines to the screen surface, and hence enhances the screening process. The vibratory motion, the surface slope angle as well as the geometrical parameters determine the effectiveness of the screen for a particular task.

Gates & Diverters

Diverter Gates are used extensively in the bulk material processing industry to direct the flow of material to various processing circuits, regulate the amount of flow to various circuits, and to isolate circuits for maintenance. They can be as basic as a single to double diverter with a manual lever to change blade position from one side to the other, or they can be fully automated devices capable of proportioning flow from one or more sources to a large number of destinations. Diverter gates can be of two designs depending on the characteristics of the material being handled. A simple flat blade diverter is applicable for most materials, is relatively inexpensive, easy to install and maintain. For some material, the non-jamming characteristics and sealing capabilities of the rolling blade diverter make it more suitable

Construction Material Diverter gates can be fabricated from or equipped with a wide range of construction materials depending on the characteristics of the bulk material being handled. Some examples of construction materials for different applications are:

  • Carbon Steel with abrasion resistant liners can be used for most applications.
  • Polished stainless steel liners can be used to reduce the friction between the bulk material and the gate surface thereby reducing flow problems.
  • Stainless Steel can be used in all areas in contact with acidic material to prevent corrosion. In some instances it may be necessary to fabricate the entire gate from stainless seal.
  • Plastic and rubber seals an liners can be used for a wide range of design features. For example, rolling blade gates can use rubber seals and both types can be equipped with internal or external rubber liners for noise abatement
